31.01.2013 Cape Town

Mit etwas Kopfschmerzen erwachten wir heute Morgen um 9 Uhr, machten uns für das Erklimmen des Tafelbergs bereit und kurz vor 10 Uhr sassen wir beim Frühstück. Heute trübte kein Wölkchen den Himmel - also rief der Tafelberg!

We woke up this morning at 9 am with a slight headache, made ourselves ready to climb the Table Mountain and shortly before 10 am we sat at breakfast. There was no cloud to see - thus the Table Mountain called us!

Eine Stunde später nahmen wir unser Mietauto in Empfang (wieder ein brandneuer Toyota Etios, diesmal in grau!) und fuhren zur Seilbahnstation des Tafelbergs, wo unser Wanderweg 'Platteklip Gorge' begann... nach etwa 1 1/2 Stunden auf sehr steilem, treppenähnlichem Pfad waren wir oben auf dem Tafelberg angelangt! Eine atemberaubende Aussicht belohnte unsere Strapazen und wir wanderten der ganzen Tischplatte entlang.

An hour later we picked up our rental car (another brand new Toyota Etios, but this time in grey) and we drove up to the cableway station, where our trekking path 'Platteklip Gorge' started... after about 1 1/2 hours on a very steep, step-like path we reached the top! A breathtaking view rewarded our exertions and we walked along the whole tabletop.

Hinunter nahmen wir die Seilbahn und trafen doch auf dem Parkplatz tatsächlich Bekannte aus der Schweiz! Zurück im Hotel gab es eine abkühlende Dusche und eine kurze Verschnaufpause bis wir dann um 17:30 Uhr mit dem Taxi an die Waterfront fuhren. Schon bald sichteten wir unsere ideale Bar & Lounge um den herrlichen Abend zu genießen...

Back down we took the cableway and at the parking lot we indeed met some people for Switzerland that we knew! At the hotel we had a cooling shower and a short rest until we took a cab to the Waterfront at 5:30 pm. Soon after our arrival we had spotted our ideal bar and lounge to enjoy the wonderful evening...

Zum Abendessen genossen wir frische Riesencrevetten und Fisch in einem der Waterfront Restaurants mit a capella, Blick auf den Tafelberg und dem perfekten Service von Katarina vom Baikalsee!

For dinner we went to one of the Waterfront restaurants and had fresh prawns and fish with a capella, view to the Table Mountain and the perfect service of Katarina from the Lake Baikal!

30.01.2013 Cape Town

Heute schliefen wir bis um 9:30 Uhr und wenige Minuten später befanden wir uns beim Frühstück: Eine riesige Auswahl an frischen Säften und Obst erwartete uns und ließ auch sonst keine Wünsche offen! Es war bedeckt und bedeutend kühler als gestern... eigentlich hatten wir vor den Tafelberg zu erklimmen, aber ohne Aussicht wäre das schade! So genossen wir unser schönes Zimmer und ich holte etwas Schlaf nach (Hansruedi hatte mich mit seinem Schnarchen fast die ganze Nacht wach gehalten!)...

Als sich die Bewölkung etwas auflockerte, packte ich die Gelegenheit und ging nochmals die 3 Parks abjoggen - so holte ich auch meinen Mangel an Bewegung auf! : )

This morning we slept until 9:30 am and only a few minutes later we sat outside at breakfast: A huge variety of fresh juices and fruit as well as everything else you can think of was awaiting us! It was overcast and significantly cooler than yesterday... actually we intended to climb the Table Mountain today, but it was a pity not having a view! So we took the chance to take advantage of our beautiful room and I made up some sleep (Hansruedi had kept me awake with his snoring almost the whole night!)…

When the sun started to gaze through the clouds, I took the chance and went for a run through the 3 parks once again – that’s how I made up also my shortage of exercise! ; )

Um 17 Uhr führen wir mit dem Sightseeing Bus durch die ganze Stadt nach Camps Bay und der Küste entlang zur Waterfront. Heute wehte der bekannte Kapwind in seiner ganzen Stärke und die Wolken waren den ganzen Tag nicht vom Tafelberg gewichen - gut dass wir es gelassen haben hinaufzukraxeln!

At 5 pm we went on the sightseeing bus through the whole town to Camps Bay and along the coast to the Waterfront. Today the famous Cape wind was very strong and the clouds didn’t move from the Table Mountain – it was a good choice not having climbed up there!

Kurz vor 19 Uhr erreichten wir die Waterfront wo Esthi uns schon erwartete. Ich habe Esther Tobler vor 25 Jahren hier in Kapstadt kennen gelernt und nun hat sie hier um Kapstadt für uns die Hotels und T-Times der Golfplätze reserviert (www.golfbuddies.co.za). Wir fuhren nach Camps Bay zum Abendessen und hatten natürlich vieles auszutauschen… Auf dem Rückweg zeigte sie uns noch, wo etwas los ist in Kapstadt, so suchten wir noch 2 Bars in der Long Street auf… So fand ein weiterer schöner Abend in Südafrika sein Ende und wir kehrten müde ins Hotel zurück.

We arrived at the Waterfront shortly before 7 pm where Esthi was already awaiting us. I got to know Esther Tobler 25 years ago here in Cape Town and now she had booked all the hotels and t-times around Cape Town for us (www.golfbuddies.co.za). We drove to Camps Bay for dinner and of course had to exchange lots of news… On the way back she showed us where there is something going on in Cape Town and we visited 2 bars in Long Street… That’s how another nice evening ended in South Africa and we returned to the hotel very tired.

29.01.2013 Cape Town

bald erreichen wir Kapstadt mit dem Blue Train / arriving Cape Town with the Blue Train

Schon früh am Morgen blinzelte die Sonne in unser Zimmer aber wir dösten bis 8 Uhr weiter. Ich bestellte einen doppelten Espresso um richtig aufzuwachen ins Zimmer und wir machten uns bereit für den kommenden Tag. Um 9 Uhr saßen wir beim Frühstück und bestaunten die hübsche Kap-Region, die sich mit Bergen, Weinreben und Obstbäumen präsentierte. Danach machten wir uns abreisebereit und begaben uns in die Panorama Lounge um das letzte Glas Champagner zu genießen und meinen Blog zu aktualisieren.

Already early in the morning the sun was twinkling into our room but we snoozed on until about 8 am. I ordered a double espresso to our room to properly wake up and we made ourselves ready for the day. At 9 am we sat at breakfast and watched the pretty Cape region with its mountains, vineyards and fruit trees passing by. Thereafter we got our luggage ready for departure and had a last glass of champagne in the panorama lounge while I updated my blog.

Um 12 Uhr nach 1650 km Reisestrecke lief der Blue Train in Kapstadt ein, unser Gepäck wurde zum Ausgang gebracht und wir wurden von einem Chauffeur des TAJ Hotel (www.tajhotels.com/Luxury/City-Hotels/Taj-Cape-Town-Cape-Town/Overview.html) der uns zum Hotel fuhr. Es war wahnsinnig heiss aber wir erkundeten trotzdem das historische Viertel, das sich gleich um die Ecke befindet, und setzten uns in ein Café bis unser Zimmer bezugsbereit war.

At noon after a stretch of 1650 km the Blue Train arrived at Cape Town, our luggage was transported outside and a driver of the TAJ Hotel (www.tajhotels.com/Luxury/City-Hotels/Taj-Cape-Town-Cape-Town/Overview.html) awaited us and drove us into town. It was terribly hot but nonetheless we explored the historic district just around the corner and had a drink in a café until our room was ready to move in.

Um 13:30 Uhr bezogen wir unser hübsches Zimmer mit Aussicht auf den Tafelberg, räumten endlich einmal unsere Koffer aus und machten uns frisch, denn um 15 Uhr hatten wir bereits wieder abgemacht: Der Bühler Clan ist heute aus der Schweiz angekommen und wir trafen sie zum Tee im Mount Nelson Hotel...

Zurück im Hotel hatte ich großes Bedürfnis mich freizulaufen und so ging ich in den gegenüber gelegenen Parks eine Stunde joggen - Mann, tat das gut! Nach einer kurzen Dusche setzten wir uns ins Twankey zum Apero, eine Bar die zum Hotel gehört und im Gegensatz zum Hotel über gratis WiFi verfügt! (Nadine: Auch hier ist es so, je teurer das Hotel desto knausriger mit dem Internet!)

At 1:30 pm we moved into our pretty room with view to the Table Mountain, finally emptied our suitcases for once and refreshed ourselves as we had an appointment at 3 pm: The Bühler Clan had arrived from Switzerland today and we met them for tea in the Mount Nelson Hotel...

Back at the Hotel I felt very much like running myself free and so I went for an hours fun in the 3 parks just next door - gosh, it did so good! After a short shower we went to the Twankey's Bar which belongs to the hotel but in contrast to the hotel has free WiFi (like almost everywhere: The more expensive the hotel is the less they offer!)!

Um 21 Uhr trafen wir mit dem Taxi im trendigen Restaurant Aubergine ein, wo Catherine uns mit superbem Speis und Trank verwöhnte - ein wirklich heisser Tipp!

28.01.2013 Pretoria – Cape Town

Kurz vor 6 Uhr erwachten wir, machten uns bereit und verstauten unsere Koffer im Auto. Auf dem Weg zur Blue Train Station tankten wir unser Mietauto voll und fuhren um 7 Uhr im Bahnhof vor. Dort warteten schon die Butler, die unser Gepäck entgegennahmen und uns in die Lounge führten. Während wir auf das Boarding warteten, wurde uns Kaffee und Tee serviert und wir lernten schon mal einige Mitreisende kennen! Die Butler erledigten inzwischen die Abgabe unseres Mietautos – was für ein Service!

Shortly before 6 am we woke up, made ourselves ready and stowed our luggage in the car. On the way to the Blue Train Station we fuelled it up and reached the train station at 7 am. There were already butlers waiting who took over our suitcases and guided us to the lounge. While waiting for boarding coffee and tea was served and we got to know some of the other passengers! In the meantime the butlers returned our rental car – what a service!

Um 8 Uhr gingen wir an Bord des Blue Train (www.luxurytrains.co.za) und bezogen unser Zimmer, wo schon eine Flasche Champagner auf uns wartete! Nachdem unser Butler uns detailliert über alles informiert hatte, begaben wir uns in die Panorama Lounge, genossen Espressi und frisches Gebäck und dann hatte ich endlich Zeit einmal in Ruhe meinen Blog zu aktualisieren, da es im Zug WiFi hat.

At 8 am we boarded the Blue Train (www.luxurytrains.co.za) and moved into our room where there was already a bottle of champagne waiting for us! After our butler had informed us in detail about everything, we went to the panorama lounge, had some espresso and fresh rolls and then I finally had time to update my blog, as there is WiFi in the train.

Danach gab es eine Siesta… im Bett konnten wir die südafrikanische Steppe mit ihren Tausenden von Rindern vorbeiziehen sehen und gleichzeitig im Bildschirm die Aussicht vom Cockpit mitverfolgen!

Thereafter there was time for a siesta… from our bed we could watch the South African savanna passing by and at the same time we could follow the view from the cockpit on the TV screen!

Um 13 Uhr setzten wir uns in den Speisesaal zum Brunch, wo wir mit leckeren Speisen und Weinen verwöhnt wurden! Darauf folgte eine weitere Siesta – endlich Ferien! ; ) Draussen braute sich ein Gewitter zusammen und wir mussten einige Male anhalten, weil es Stromausfälle gab…

At 1 pm we had brunch in the dining room where we were treated with fine food and wines! Thereafter we had another siesta – finally vacation! ; ) Outside there was a heavy thunderstorm gathered and we had to stop several times due to electricity cuts…

Kimberley Bahnhof / train station

Mit einer Stunde Verspätung kamen wir um 18:15 Uhr in Kimberley an. Dort warteten 2 Busse, mit denen wir eine Exkursion zu den Diamanten machten. In Kimberley wurde in 1866 eine extrem ergiebige Vulkanröhre entdeckt, die Diamanten beherbergte. Heute ist die Stadt das Zentrum wo 65 % aller Diamanten klassifiziert werden. Im Museum konnten wir alle Arten und Grössen von Diamanten bestaunen!

With 1 hour delay we arrived in Kimberley at 6:15 pm. There 2 buses were awaiting us to take us on an excursion to the diamonds. In Kimberley an extremely rich volcano pipe which contained diamonds was discovered in 1866. Today this town is the centre where 65 % of all diamonds in the world are classified. In the museum we marvelled at different kinds and sizes of diamonds!

Zurück im Blue Train nahm ich endlich mein langersehntes Bad! Danach gingen wir zur Bar zum Apero und hatten einen netten Schwatz mit dem Manager Herbert. 2 Cüpli später um 21:30 Uhr wurden wir zu Tisch gebeten und wieder erwartete uns ein fantastisches Menü in gediegener Atmosphäre…

Back in the Blue Train I finally took my long desired bath! Thereafter we went to the for an appetizer and had a nice chat with the manager Herbert. 2 glasses of champagne later at 9:30 pm we were asked to our table and once again we enjoyed a fantastic menu in a very stylish atmosphere…
